Social Media Character Counter

Check your post against the character limits of X, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube and TikTok.

Limits shown are the platforms’ published maximums at the time of writing; platforms change them from time to time. On X, every link counts as 23 characters and most emoji as 2.

Runs in your browser — your data never leaves your device.

About the Social Media Character Counter

Write once and see straight away where your post fits. Live bars show how much of each platform's limit you have used, turning amber near the limit and red when you go over. Words, hashtags, mentions and lines are counted too.

Characters are counted the way people see them, so an emoji or an accented letter counts as one. For X, links count as 23 characters and emoji as 2, as on the platform.

How to use the Social Media Character Counter

  1. Type or paste your post.
  2. Check the bars for the platforms you use.
  3. Shorten the text until the bar is no longer red.

How it works

Characters are counted as grapheme clusters (what you see as one character). X uses weighted counting: Latin and Arabic-script characters count 1; CJK characters and emoji count 2; every link counts 23.

Examples

  • A 250-character caption fits X (280) but leaves little room; on Instagram it uses only about 11% of 2,200.
  • A 120-character video title is over YouTube's 100-character limit.

Frequently asked questions

Is my text sent to your server?

No. Everything runs in your browser, on your own device. Nothing you type or paste is uploaded or stored.

Do the limits ever change?

Yes, platforms update them from time to time and paid plans may allow more. The figures here are the standard published limits.
