Tile Calculator
Work out how many floor or wall tiles (and boxes) you need for a room, including wastage.

About the Tile Calculator
Enter the length and width of a floor (or the width and height of a wall) and choose your tile size to see how many tiles to buy. A wastage allowance covers tiles that are cut at the edges or broken.
If tiles are sold by the box, enter how many tiles are in a box to see the number of boxes.
How to use the Tile Calculator
- Choose feet or metres and enter the length and width (for a wall: width and height).
- Choose a tile size, or Custom size to type your own.
- Set the extra percentage for cutting and breakage (10% is typical, 15% for diagonal laying).
- Optionally enter tiles per box, then click Calculate tiles.
Formula
Area = length × width.
Tiles = area ÷ area of one tile, rounded up, then the wastage percentage is added and rounded up again.
Boxes = tiles ÷ tiles per box, rounded up.
Examples
- A 12 × 10 ft room (120 sq ft) with 24 × 24 in tiles (4 sq ft each): 30 tiles + 10% = 33 tiles.
- The same room with 12 × 12 in tiles needs 120 + 10% = 132 tiles.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is this estimate?
It is a planning estimate based on standard formulas. Actual quantities depend on workmanship, material quality and site conditions, so confirm with your contractor or engineer before buying.
Should I include grout lines?
Grout gaps are small and are covered by the wastage allowance, so you can ignore them for estimating.
Should I buy extra tiles?
Yes. Keep a few spare tiles from the same batch for future repairs, because colour can differ between batches.
