How it works

  • A word is a run of letters or numbers. Hyphenated words ("well-known") and contractions ("don't") count as one word.
  • Reading time assumes an average adult reading speed of about 238 words per minute.
  • Speaking time assumes about 140 words per minute, a comfortable pace for presentations.
  • Characters are counted as visible symbols, so emojis and accented letters count as one.

Examples

  • A 500-word essay takes about 2 minutes to read and 3½ minutes to read aloud.
  • A 1,500-word article is roughly a 6-minute read.

Frequently asked questions

Does the word counter work with Urdu and other languages?

Yes. It counts words in any language that separates words with spaces, including Urdu, Arabic and most European languages.

Is my text stored or uploaded?

No. Counting happens entirely in your browser. Your text is never sent to our server.

Why is my word count different from Microsoft Word?

Programs treat symbols, numbers and hyphens slightly differently. Differences are usually just a few words; for strict limits, follow the tool your teacher or publisher uses.
