About the Data Storage Converter

Storage makers, internet packages and operating systems use two different systems for data sizes. Decimal units (KB, MB, GB, TB) go up in steps of 1,000. Binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB) go up in steps of 1,024 — Windows shows binary values but labels them KB, MB and GB.

This converter handles both, so you can see why a new 1 TB hard drive shows as about 931 GB in Windows.

How to use the Data Storage Converter

  1. Enter a value.
  2. Choose the units to convert from and to.
  3. Read the result and the quick table.

How it works

1 byte = 8 bits.

Decimal: 1 KB = 1,000 bytes; 1 MB = 1,000 KB; 1 GB = 1,000 MB; 1 TB = 1,000 GB.

Binary: 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes; 1 MiB = 1,024 KiB; 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB; 1 TiB = 1,024 GiB.

Examples

  • 1 GB = 1,000 MB.
  • 1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes = 931.32 GiB (what Windows calls “931 GB”).
  • 1 GiB = 1,073.74 MB.

Frequently asked questions

Is my internet package measured in GB or GiB?

Mobile and internet packages are usually measured in decimal MB and GB, while your phone may display binary values — so numbers can look slightly different.

What is the difference between Mb and MB?

Mb (lowercase b) is megabits, used for internet speed; MB is megabytes, used for file size. 8 megabits = 1 megabyte.
