About the Text Compare

Spot the changes between two versions of a contract, article, list or piece of code. Added parts are highlighted in green and removed parts in red, with a count of each.

Line by line is best for lists and code; word by word is best for paragraphs, where a single changed word should stand out.

How to use the Text Compare

  1. Paste the original text on the left and the changed text on the right.
  2. Choose line-by-line or word-by-word, and whether to ignore case or extra spaces.
  3. Click Compare. Use Swap to reverse the two texts.

How it works

The tool finds the longest common subsequence of the two texts — the largest set of lines (or words) that appear in both, in the same order. Everything else is marked as added or removed. Identical beginnings and endings are skipped first, so typical edits compare quickly.

Examples

  • The quick brown fox vs The quick red fox (word by word) → 1 word removed (brown), 1 word added (red).
  • Two versions of a 200-line price list → only the 3 changed lines are highlighted.

Frequently asked questions

Is my text sent to your server?

No. Everything runs in your browser, on your own device. Nothing you type or paste is uploaded or stored.

Can I compare Word or PDF files?

Copy the text out of each file and paste it here. Formatting such as bold or tables is not compared — only the text.
