Hash Generator

Generate MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 hashes of text or files, and verify checksums.

Runs in your browser — your data never leaves your device.

About the Hash Generator

A hash is a fixed-length fingerprint of data. Even a one-letter change gives a completely different hash. Developers use hashes to check that files downloaded correctly, compare data and store fingerprints.

Type text or choose a file to see all five common hashes at once. Paste a checksum published by a software website to verify your download — a match is highlighted.

How to use the Hash Generator

  1. Choose Text or File.
  2. Type the text, or choose or drop a file (up to 500 MB).
  3. Copy the hash you need.
  4. To verify a download, paste the published checksum in Compare with a known hash.

How it works

SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 are calculated with your browser's built-in Web Crypto API; MD5 with a standard JavaScript implementation (RFC 1321). Text is hashed as UTF-8 bytes.

MD5 and SHA-1 are fine for checksums but are no longer secure for passwords or signatures — use SHA-256 or stronger.

  • hello → SHA-256 2cf24dba5fb0a30e26e83b2ac5b9e29e1b161e5c1fa7425e73043362938b9824

Frequently asked questions

Can a hash be reversed to get the original text?

No. Hashing is one-way. However, short or common text can be guessed by trying many inputs, so never rely on a plain hash to protect passwords.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The file is read and hashed inside your browser and never leaves your device.
